Cargo Golf a Smashing Success for 6th Consecutive Year

Golfers among the cargo community associated with SriLankan Cargo descended on the picturesque Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, on the occasion of the SriLankan Cargo Golf Tournament.

The event was held for the sixth time, and had approximately100 participants, including 70 from overseas.

India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, His Excellency Alok Prasad, was present as the Chief Guest, and the organisers were pleasantly surprised when the High Commissioner for Malaysia accompanied him, together with a number of other Indian diplomats including the Deputy High Commissioner.

The SriLankan Cargo Golf Tournament is one of four golf events that SriLankan organises annually. The airline is very supportive of golf as it draws a niche market clientele to Sri Lanka. The carrier also promotes other sports such as Rugby, Marathons, and Surfing.

The Senior Management was well represented at the event, underlying the importance of golf to SriLankan. They were led by CEO Peter Hill, together with Head of Cargo Nalin Rodrigo, Head of Corporate Communications Chandana De Silva, and Senior Manager Flight Operations Capt. Milinda Ratnayake.

The first day, 21st September, was allocated for practice, and the tournament proper took place on 22nd September.

Arne Lassen of Germany was crowned Overall Winner, with the Runner-up being Eihiko Ishiguro of Japan.

The team event was won by the team of Head of Cargo Nalin Rodrigo, P Ingsiriwat (Thailand) and Aruna Ratnayake (Colombo), who graciously withdrew to give the title to the team of Kong Choon Fatt (Malaysia), S. Thapthiang (Thailand), and Kow Yew Hoe (Singapore).

There was also a Fun Golf Tournament, which saw Peggy Nowak of France bagging three awards – Ladies Lowest Score, Ladies Longest Drive, and Ladies Putting Winner. Other awards went to Mahiman Yapa, Cargo Sales Manager Sri Lanka, and Sujan Malawana (Colombo), who tied for the Gents Lowest Score.

The winner of the Gents Longest Drive was Varath Kumpir of Thailand, while the Gents Putting Competition was won by Janaka Munasinghe, Manager Cargo Operations.

The event closed with a gala awards ceremony at the Golf Club, which included a fashion show by Victoria’s Secret.

The tournament was organised by Clare Wijesinhe of SriLankan Cargo, with the support of Ramani Jayasinghe of Promotions, Natasha Gunsekera (Cargo) and the close co-operation of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.
