  Dedicated Internet Domain for Airlines

Recently SITA introduced an aviation specific Internet domain, .aero dedicated for airlines.

.aero will provide an unique identity for airlines differentiating from the other Internet domain extensions such as .com (commercial), .net (network) or country specific domain extensions (.lk; .sg; .uk etc.)

SriLankan Airlines has taken an initiative to lead in the migration to .aero from the present country specific .lk domain. Further, the SriLankan’s present domain .lk is not the ideal for an airline operating internationally.

In line with the SMT direction, an aggressive migration plan was prepared and tested, and is not ready for cutover during the period 30th May to 1st June 2003. Once successfully migrated to the new domain, the SriLankan’s website will become www.srilankan.aero replacing the present srilankan.lk. Similarly websites ulcreweb.com & srilankanmail.com too will change.

Accordingly, the present email extensions .lk will be replaced with .aero. However, customers and users can continue to use .lk domain extensions for a reasonable period of time until .aero identity is well established. The discontinuation of the previous domains will be decided at a later stage.

Among the other activities that are in the background for the process are the re-mapping of the Type B messages over Internet mail, uploading the SriLankan mirror website located in USA, changes to the iris desk top and all the web contents in the Internet and Intranet which have .lk references, securing the new domain from the Internet security threats.
